SHORT STORIES
English Story. Edited by Woodrow Wyatt. Collins. 287 pp. This collection of English short stories, the seventh in a series, sustains its good standard. Stephen Spender, with a tale about the tragedy of displaced persons, James Hanley, who bases his story on rehabilitation, and William Sansom, who writes about an anxiety neurosis case—all turn to aspects of the war for their themes and have made moving stories out of well organised material. Two women, Elizabeth Berridge and Patricia Ledward, contribute striking stories.
