APPLICATION FOR BAIL REFUSED
MEN REMANDED ON SERIOUS CHARGE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Dec. IS An application by Roy Vincent, a milkman, and Robert Spring, a labourer, for the Supreme Court to order the Lower Hutt City Justices to grant them bail, was refused by the Chief Justice. Sir Humphrey O’Leary yesterday. Vincent and Spring stand remanded till Tuesday next on charges in connexion with the breaking and entering of the Lower Hutt Post Office last week-end. The Crown’s opposition was on the grounds that if they were allowed to be at large, there was a danger that appellants might commit further crimes. For the appellants, it was urged that refusal of ball, if continued after the appearance on Tuesday, might mean they would remain in custody until the next sitting of the Supreme Court in February. His Honour said that the appellants were charged with serious offences, and grave circumstances surrounded them.
