CURRENT NOTES

The December meeting of the North Christchurch Garden Club took the form of an al fresco party in the Botanic Gardens. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. An ingenious floral competition was won by Mesdames Sheffield and Forsyth and winners of the monthly competition were as follows: class A, Mrs Quartermain 1, Mrs Flavel 2, Mrs Lake 3: class B, Mrs McClure 1, Mrs Brightling 2; cut bloom: Mrs Forsyth 1; vegetables, Mrs Mrs Lake 1. The final meeting for the year of the Federation of Congregational Women took the form of a Christmas party at which Mrs Wilson presided over a good attendance. Each member received a gift from the Christmas tree. Mrs Sturge acting as Father Christmas. A varied programme was presented by Mrs E. Hili (songs), Mrs Hollingum elocutionary items, a play bv members of the Home Economics Drama Circle and sketches by members of the Halswell Women’s Division. Mr Maurice Baker played piano-ac-cordion solos. Supper was served by the Linwood members.

Mrs H. G. Hart, who has lived for the last 11 years in Christchurch, left the Dominion this week by the Corinthic on her return to South Africa, where she formerly had her home and where her married daughters are living. Mrs Hart is a sister of Mrs J. M. Dawson. Peterborough street west, with whom she has been staying. Miss Iris Moxley, a well-known. Christchurch singer, will leave New Zealand on January 30 for Sydney, where she will continue the practice of her profession. She is the holder of the diplomas of F.T.C.L., L.T.C.L., and L.R.S.M. and she intends when she reaches Sydney to continue teaching singing, to study languages and to take a course at the school of opera. In Christchurch, Miss Moxley has been most generous in singing for the benefit of patriotic and cultural causes and she has taken leading parts in the oratorios “Elijah” and the ‘•Messiah.” in the opera “Carmen,” in “Merrie England” and .in the “Alto Rhapsody” with the Christchurch Liedertafel. The bridge party which was to have been held at the Canterbury Women’s Club on Wednesday, December 17, has been cancelled. Advt.
