RANKING LIST GAMES
R. G. PATTINSON TWICE BEATEN
The main feature of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s ranking list challenge matches played this season has been the two consecutive defeats of R. G. Pat fins on, Who was ranked No. 1 mens player when the list was published at the beginning of the ‘ season. Pattinson lost in two straight sets to both W. J. Smith, now No. 1 ranking player, and A. R. Cant. The latter now occupies No. 2 position and Pattinson No. 3. In the women’s section, Mrs K. Hart withstood a determined challenge for first place by Mrs H. Lane, winning 10-8, 8-2. Results of challenge matches played so far this season are as follows: Men’s Matches . _ R, G. Pattinson lost to W. J. Smith (challenger) for first place. 2r6, 3-6: B. R. Penfold beat A. L. Blackwell (challenger), for seventh place, 5-7, 7-5. 6-3; T. W. Walls lost to E. J. Donnlthorne (challenger), for ninth place, 8-10, 3-6: M. Wall lost to A. T. Goddard (challenger), for eleventh place; G. E. R. Atkinson lost to R. J. Telford (challenger), for thirteenth place, 1-6, 8-10; M. D. Lees beat L. R. Flint (challenger), for seventeenth place, 6-2, 7-5 E. W. Tippens beat A. E. G. Elsom (challenger), for nineteenth place, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4; R. G. Pattinson lost to A. R. Cant (challenger), for second place, 6-8, 6-8. Women’s Matches Mrs K. Hart beat Mrs H. Lane J challenger), for first place, 10-8, 6-2; Mrs I. Hatherley beat Mrs M. Lawrence (challenger), for third place, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0; Miss J. Mac Gibbon lost to Mrs D •donnlthorne (challenger), for fifth place, 5-7. 3-6; Miss I. Kitson beat Miss J. Murray (challenger), for ninth place, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1; Mrs B. Boyd beat Miss r P. Webb (challenger), for eleventh place, 8-6, 6-2; Mfs S. Joyce lost to Miss S. Elsom (challenger), for thirteenth place, by default; MissA. Peppier beat Mrs V. Boatwood (challenger), for fifteenth place, 6-4, *64), 7-5; Miss P. Kitson lost to Miss S. Hutchison (challenger), for seventeenth place. 6-4, 6-2; Miss B. Pierce lost to Miss V. RoUltt (challenger), for nineteenth place, 6-4, 6-4.
