SWIMMING

CANCELLATION OF CLUB CARNIVALS It was inevitable that the national, junior, and intermediate championships set down to be held at Stratford in January would not now be held because of the outbreak of infantile paralysis, said Miss D. Brown at a meeting of the Canterbury Swimming Centre. Miss Brown suggested that the centre’s delegate to the national council be instructed to vote fog a postponement of the championships. Last year, when an outbreak had occurred in Southland, the council, in a high-handed manner, had abandoned them and it might take the same action this season. If ’ they were abandoned the centre responsible might not be able to have them for another 10 years. Supporting the suggestion, Mr L. Donaldson said that if the championships were postponed it might be possible to hold them during the first term school holidays in May. I Several clubs cancelled arrangements for carnivals. It was stated, however, that water polo competitions, which did not include any swimmers under 16, would be continued. Miss Brown and Messrs G. Laurie and J. Ironsides were appointed selectors for the Canterbury team. OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS (P A.) DUNKDIN, December 9.
