GOVERNMENT’S THANKS

POLICE TRIBUTE TO CITIZENS The thanks of the Government to all who had helped in the fire were expressed by the Minister of Labour (Mr A. McLagan) yesterday. He paid tribute to the firemen, police, servicemen, City Council staff, and citizens generally for the splendid way in which they had tackled the job of giving such assistance as was in their power. The Superintendent of Police (Mr H. Scott) also praised the help given by members of the oublic at the fire. He said the crowds had helped the police in every manner possible. It was a further example of the orderliness of the people of Christchurch on such occasions. Mr Scott also thanked the Army, Navy. Air Force. St. John Ambulance Association, Red Cross, and social workers, who had done so much in a grave emergency. He said that more than 100 members of the Police Force were stationed at the fire.
