CASUALTIES IN OFFICE
“SURROUNDED BY FLAMES” The various branches of the administrative office of the firm suffered the most casualties, at least 16 of the missing persons being employed there. One of the survivors from the office staff said that all employees had been told to leave the building, but their offices on the third floor were surrounded by flames. A few escaped. One young woman employed in the office was to have attended her engagement party this evening. She is missing, as is her fiance, who was also employed by the firm. A customer who was trying on a dress in the .shop was told- by an assistant that it would be wise to leave. At that time there was faint smoke and a smell of burning in the building. By the time the customer was outside, the whole building was in flames.
Bystanders who saw the fire shortly after it broke out, said that female employees, not realising their danger, were leaning out of windows and watching the smoke coming from other departments. Many were seen to scream and run back from the windows as the flames reached the rooms in which they were working.
