TRANSPORT REFORM
Sir,—As lam a strong supporter of the bus as a means of passenger transport in Christchurch, it was a source of great satisfaction to me to read in your paper of the decision to scrap the obsolete trarti. However. I would suggest making a real switch over now the ball is starting to roll. Dismantle all the unsightly overhead wires where possible (it must come sooner or later) and place totally enclosed double-decker buses, either trolley or engine-driven (London type) on the roads. Each one will carry a load equivalent to two of the present type, and the city is ideally suited for them with its miles of level streets. Put Christchurch on the map!—Yours etc., GORDON JACKSON. November 18, 1947.
Sir,—The Tramway Board is to be heartily congratulated in its far-reach-ing decisions for progressive reforms. The expense is thoroughly justifiable, since an economical service of small, fast units will evolve, which may even pay for itself, a thing which trams nave never done. Hence, when the change is completed, it is possible for the rate to be severely cut, if not struck out altogether; and Christchurch will have a speedy, silent, and frequent service. Trolley-buses could safely be put on the Cranford streetAddington route without causing congestion. It is to be hoped, also, that the board will number its buses in the same way as the trams, as destinations are hard to read, especially for old and short-sighted persons and for anybody at night.—Yours, etc., TYRES. November 18, 1947.
