Cardinal Spellman, Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, will visit Australia next year, according to an announcement in New York. It is learned in Wellington that should the visit take place it would probably coincide with the proposed attendance at the Melbourne celebrations of three cardinals of the British Commonwealth —the Archbishop of Westminster (Cardinal Griffin), the Archbishop of Toronto (Cardinal McGuigan), and the Archbishop of Sydney (Cardinal Gilroy). In the event of their attendance at Melbourne, it is thought probable that the cardinals would also visit New Zealand.—(P.A.) His Lordship Bishop Lyons left Christchurch yesterday for an official visit to the parishes of Fairlie, Temuka, Timaru, Ashburton, and Methven. The Bishop will be absent from the city for about three weeks.

Sir Bernard Lomas-Walker, a solicitor by profession and a former chairman of the West Riding County Council, Yorkshire, is at present on a business trip to New Zealand’ accompanied by Lady Lomas-Walker; Sir Bernard Lomas-Walker has been practising as a solicitor in Leeds for 45 years, and for 27 years was an aiderman of the borough of Harrogate. The Presbyterian General Assembly, meeting in Christchurch yesterday, appointed the Rev. J. Baird as its representative at the meeting of the World k Council of Churches at Amsterdam in 1948, with the Rev. A. Whitelaw as alternative delegate.* The Assembly also appointed Mr and Mrs Baird, together with Mr and Mrs Whitelaw. as its delegates to the conference of the Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva.

Dr. R. A. Falla will leave on Saturday to take up his new post of director of the Dominion Museum. Wellington. Dr. W. R. B. Oliver, who has been appointed temporary director of the Canterbury Museum, arrived in Christchurch this week and will take over his new duties on Monday.

Greetings from the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland (the Rt. Rev. Robert Boyd, of Belfast) were received yesterday by the Presbyterian General Assembly in Christchurch.

Mr Ernest Keith Phillips was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand yesterday by Mr Justice Fleming on the motion of Mr H. de R. Flesher. A presentation to the retiring chief librarian of the General Assembly Library, Dr. G. H. Scholefield, was made by the staff of the Legislative Department yesterday. The Speaker of the House of Representatives (Mr R. McKeen) presided, and a presentation of a china tea set and coffee service was made by the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser). Tributes were paid to Dr. Scholefield’s services to the Dominion in his literary research and in development of the Parliamentary Library into a national institution. Mr Fraser praised especially Dr. Scholefield’s biographical work.—(P.A.)

Mr Ralph Hogg, first assistant master at Rongotai College, has been appointed liaison officer to the Victoria University College Council in place of Mr A. H. Thom, who has been appointed inspector of post-primary schools. — (P.A.)

One of the oldest ministers of the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. R. McCully, of Dunedin, was welcomed by the Moderator (the Rt. Rev. J. D. Smith) at yesterday’s session of the General Assembly in Christchurch. Mr McCully, who was born in 1867, was ordained a minister in 189 G.
