WORKERS IN MILK FACTORIES

FIVE-DAY, FORTY-HOUR WEEK Under the. terms agreed upon in concilation, workers bound by *the New Zealand (except Wellington) Milk Pasteurising and Bottling Factories Employees’ Award, will work a 40-hour, five-day week and receive increases in pay by a new award which has been approved by the Court of Arbitration.

The classification of workers has been altered, and wages increased by about 10s a week. Workers will be paid £6 Is 9d a week, and foremen on any shift where more than 31 workers are employed, £7 2s 9d. Rises from 3s 6d to 18s 6d are provided for juniors, who will be paid £2 Is if .under 16 years, and up to £4 9s if between 19 and 20 years. Drivers of vehicles of up to two tons will receive £6 14s 4d, and those driving vehicles of more than 10 tons, £7 7s Rates for Saturday afternoon work will’ be at time and a half, and for Sundays, double time. Employers have to provide waterproof boots wl ere necessary, or pay Is 6d a week. If he wishes, a worker may receive a free quart of milk each day. The wage clauses were deemed to have come into force on June 1. and the award will remain in force until August 31, 1948.
