PAPER BAGS FOR FERTILISER
lower customs duty SUGGESTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 21. A request for the lowering of the customs duty on paper containers for fertiliser was made to-day' in the House of Representatives by Mr A. S. Sutherland (Opposition, Hauraki). Mr Sutherland said that 7.000,000 paper containers for fertiliser were being imported from France to meet the deficiency of jute bags, but whereas a 3 per cent, primage duty was paid on jute bags, a customs duty of 67 3-8 per cent, would be paid on paper containers. The latter charge would bring in nearly £200.000 in revenue for the Government, and would increase the cost of fertiliser to farmers by about 15s a ton. Mr Sutherland suggested that the lowering of customs duty on the paper containers could be done on a reciprocal basis with France, as she was buying large quantities of wool from New Zealand.
The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) said the cost of paper fertiliser containers. which came from other countries besides France, had been fully allowed for in this season’s prices for dairy products and meat.
