PRINCESS’S WEDDING GOWN
ATTEMPT TO LEARN DESIGN (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 8. A watch is being kept for two men who yesterday tried to bribe a guard at Norman Hartnell’s West End dress salon to let them see the secrets of Princess Elizabeth’s wedding gown. The “Daily Express” says the guard is one of 80 employed by the security corps which protects many West End fashion houses and industrial plants all over the country. The design of the wedding gown, the newspaper says, would be worth thousands of pounds to international fashion houses, which, could prepare their own models and market them well in advance of their rivals. The newspaper also says that even seamstresses and others employed in Hartnell’s workrooms have been approached w’ith bribes for even small details of the gown. Population of U.S.—The United States’ population increased by 2.279.000 in 1946 k making the total, including the armed forces overseas, 142,673,000 on January 1. 1947. The Census Bureau describes the increase in 1946 as the greatest in history. The increase since the previous census on April 1. 1940. was 11,000,000. or 8.4 per cent. This also was unusually great Most of the recent growth is attributed to natural increase.—Washington, October 7.
