VACANT JOBS IN FACTORIES
FIGURES DOUBTED BY MR HOLLANDER SMALL AMOUNT OF OVERTIME From Our Own Reporter HANMER SPRINGS, October 7. Although a good service was given by the National Employment Service, he thought that the figures in the last six-monthly survey of the office, quoting vacancies in the clothing manufacturing industry, were highly exaggerated, said Mr A. M. Hollander when he opened the annual confer-* ence of the New Zealand Garment Manufacturers’ Federation this evening
In April there were 2808 males and 14,210 females employed in the clothing industry, Mr Hollander said. The survey listed the vacancies as 284 males and 5082 females. “If every business was presented with more than a third of its normal staff, I wonder what would happen?” he “I*li take them,” said one delegate, and this remark met with support from other delegates. “Let me assume that the figure is exaggerated,” said Mr Hollander. “The wage bill for males in the industry is £20,920 a week, and for females £51.243, and the overtime paid is £457 and £579 a week. If the demand for female labour is so pressing, then I think the industry should work more overtime.”
