OBITUARY

MRS MARY RAYMOND Mrs Mary Raymond, who died at Timaru yesterday morning at the age of 75 years, was one of the first Justices of the Peace appointed in New Zealand. She was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Galloway, and was head nurse at the Timaru Public Hospital for many years before leav“S there in 1897 to become matron of the Greymouth Hospital, a position she relinquished in 1901 when her marriage to Mr Frank A. Raymond took

Mrs Raymond took an active part in. public affairs. She served on the South Canterbury Hospital Board for 18‘ years and on the committee of th* Plunket Society for many years. Sh* was a member of the committee of the Mayor’s Coal and Blanket Fund and of the committee of the South Canterbury Trained Nurses' Association. She was woman superintendent of the nursing division of the St. John Ambulance for several years, being created an honorary nursing sister of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem for her work. During the whole of the First World War, she was woman president of the Timaru centre of the Red Cross Society, and in recognition of her work was awarded the M.B.E. By the creation of the Mary Raymond District Nurse, her organising efforts and work during the influenza epidemic in 1918 were commemorated. She was president of the committee continuously until the district nursing was taken oyer by the South Canterbury Hospital Board in November, 1944. At the same time as she was appointed a Justice ot the Peace, Mrs Raymond was also appointed an associate magistrate and a member of the Children’s Court In addition, she worked with the officers of the Child Welfare Department in an honorary capacity. During the depression, she was a member of the management committee of the Central Relief Society. Mrs Raymond is survived by two sons, Messrs Mervyn A, Raymond and Francis G. M. Raymond, Her husband died several years ago.
