LYTTELTON NEWS

NO TENDERS FOR STATE HOUSES

No tenders had been received by the Department of Housing Construction for five State houses at Lyttelton, according to a letter received at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening from the district supervisor (Mr J. V Gibson). The letter said that the position was very unsatisfactory. Tenders were called for five houses in February, 1945, but without success. Repeated attempts to let the contract had been made both by public advertisement and by' direct approach to contractors. This also had been without result. Should the council be able to persuade any contractor, preferably resident in Lyttelton, to submit a tender, the department would be willing to consider it.

Cr F. H. Heal moved that a committee consisting of the chairman of the estates committee (Cr. G. Briggs), the chairman of the finance committee (Cr. Heal), and the town clerk (Mr J. Thompson), be set up to inquire about the prospects of getting a builder to tender for the contract of State houses at Lyttelton. The position was rather disturbing, said Cr. R E. Cairns. Building contractors were erecting a number of private houses. The committee should approach the Master Builders’ Association. Cr. Heal’s motion was carried. Sports Ground • The estates committee reported that the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) and the town clerk (Mr J. Thompson) interviewed Commodore Simpson, in charge of the naval staff, anti put before him a proposal that the personnel of H.M.N.Z.S .Tasman should uee the council’s recreation grbund and that application be made to the Government for a grant toward, the cost of putting four playing areas in order. He had agreed to press for a grant on those conditions. The report was adopted. The committee also recommended that negotiations be entered into with the Harbour Board for the erection of a Jetty ° el °w No. 6 subdivision at Diamond Harbour. This was adopted. No Bread Delivery A cqmmittee appointed by the council to interview the master bakers of Lyttelton about the resumption of bread deliveries reported that the bakers had refused the request: but had made an offer to supply bread to any vendor who would undertake the delivery.
