SOLDIERS SENTENCED

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. October 6. Having pleaded guilty to a charge of desertion from the Ist Battalion of the Hauraki Regiment five years ago, Private Colin Aubrey Richards, aged 26, was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment with hard labour by a District Court Martial at Papakura Military Camp. Pay amounting to nearly £7 was stopped to cover the cost of equipment and regimental necessaries which he also admitted he had lost. Private Thomas Anderson, of the J Force Relief Draft, who was charged with deserting between June 30 and September 22, was found not guilty. On a charge of absence without leave he was found guilty, and was sentenced to 28 days’ detention. Pay amounting to £l6 was stopped to cover the cost of kit deficiencies.
