ILLEGAL SHIPS AT HAIFA

JEWS TRANSHIPPED FOR CYPRUS JERUSALEM, October 3. When the Northlands—the second of the two illegal Jewish immigrant ships believed to have come from Black Sea ports—was escorted into Haifa harbour to-day, a man oh deck held aloft a' dead baby which he declared had died as a result of tear gas which the British naval boarding party used. This demonstration brought a strong denial from a senior British Army officer, who told correspondents: “If you are prepared to believe that you can print it. A naval officer said that a woman on board the Northlands told him that

the baby had been dead for some days. The Northlands tied up alongside the other illegal immigrant ship, the Paducah, from which 800 Jews were embarked for Cyprus, leaving 700 to be taken to Cyprus. The Northlands’ passengers will be transhipped tomorrow. Reuters correspondent in Haifa says that five more illegal immigrant ships are reported to be heading for Palestine. The dock area at Haifa has been sealed off to prevent disturbances. Four members of the naval party which boarded the Northlands off north Palestine suffered slight injuries when the Northlands took vjojept evasive action* In Jerusalem to-day Jewish political leaders sent a cable to the Secyetjry. General of the United Nation, Or, ganisation (Mr Trygve Lie) saying that Palestine Jews would continue to struggle for Jewish immigration, the settlement of waste land and political independence. The cable expressed the hope that the Arabs and Jews would not be pro. voked into fresh violence, but would “co-operate as free and equgl allies for peace and progress in fee Jewish State and other Middle East countries.*’
