DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING

PROSPECTS FOR FINAL DAY

EXCELLENCY APPEALS IN GUINEAS From Our Own Reporter

DUNEDIN, October 3. With further rain to-day, the track oe very soft for the .concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-morrow. Water was lying on the course this afternoon. With a complete change in track conditions from the first aay, some surprises are inevitable, and horses that have proved themselves in the winter conditions will be preferred. Track conditions will not affect Excellency’s position as favourite for the Dunedin Guineas, as she showed her worth in similar conditions when she won the McLean Stakes 12 months ago. Coral Arc and Kartikeya, the only runners which on form look likely to dispute the issue, have yet to demonstrate their capabilities in such going, but neither should be troubled by it. Of the remainder, most opposition may come from Bay Fort and Slick. In the Grandstand Handicap, no horse will be better suited by the going than Boolamskee, while Lord Dundonald, Loyal Lady, and Hakim are also at home in the mud. If started, Signal Officer will be well supported, but he has a big task in front of him to carry 9-13 in such conditions. Eriskay is a solid stayer, but she may not be quite ready for a hard race. Fresh runners in Frances, Batal, Gold Song, and Grill will add interest to the Federal Handicap. With the exception of the three top-weights, the class represented is very moderate, but in the conditions the veteran Sterling Lad and Gold Song W be , hard t( ? head off at the finish. _,Sir Raimond is an acceptor in both the Mnbum Handicap and the Salisbury Handicap, and may run in the latter. He is likely to be favourite in which ever race he starts.
