SUPERPHOSPHATE AND LIME
Sir,—As the delegate who introduced the superphosphate and lime discussion at the electoral committee of United Wheatgrowers yesterday I wish to_.correct the impression in your report that the committee advocated the reintroduction of the subsidy on all superphosphate. The discussion concerned wheat only. The wheatgrowers have an agreement that all increased costs will be aftded to the growers’ price, but a flat increase a bushel will react unfavourably on the grower of wheat on lighter land, where the yield is often lighter than the 32-bushel-an-acre basis that the price is fixed on. The increased acreage will unquestionably have to come from the marginal land; therefore, if more wheat is required, encouragement and incentive will have to be given to the light land grower. Up to now the loss of fertility has not been considered in the price.—Yours, etc., C. T. A. WARD. Chertsey, October 1, 1947.
