NATIONALISING BANKS

PROTEST BY LABOUR PARTY BRANCH (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. X. The Narrabri branch of the Australian Labour Party has decided to protest to the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) against the proposed nationalisation of the trading banks. The motion was made public by the president of the branch (Mr M. Ferguson) after scenes at a bank protest meeting at Narrabri. Speaking as Government representative at the meeting, Mr Ferguson had made out the case for nationalisation. When he declared that Government control meant State ownership, just as in the railways, the crowd roared in derision. Mr Ferguson subsequently said he considered that Government control of finance would be in the best interests of the community, but that he opposed the legislation because the bulk of the people were not in favour of the move. N.S.W. Decathlon Winner to Tour New Zealand.—The New South Wales State decathlon champion* Peter Mullins, who is regarded as an Olympic hope because of his all-round ability, wi|l tour New Zealand during December and January. He will return to represent New South Wales at the Australian championship carnival on January 24. Mullins is considered easily the most outstanding all-round athlete in Australia.—Sydney, Oct. L
