CRITICISM BY MR J. B. PRIESTLEY

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, October 1. Speaking at a meeting at Merthyr Tydfil, Mr J. B. Priestley, who is a member of the Royal Commission on the press, said: “What is happening in Britain to-day is a good deal better than most of the people realise. I go so far as to say that a large section of the press is now devoted to the task of persuading the people that they are haying a worse time than they actually are.” The ‘’Evening Standard,” in a leading article, criticises Mr Priestley fpr attacking the press while he is a member of the Royal Commission, before which matters are sub Judice. “No member of a Royal Commission should reveal such marked political bias against the subject of his investigations and remain on a judicial bench. Mr Priestley should resign,” says the “Evening Standard.”

CANADA TO ACCEPT 2000 REFUGEES

WORK IN CLOTHING INDUSTRY (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON. October J, The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says that the Canadian Government, under an agreement with the International Refugee Organisation, will accept 2000 displaced persons, half of them Jewish, from the British and American zones of Germany and Austria. They will be employed as tailors and seamstresses in the Canadian clothing industry.
