FISHING SEASON

POOR OPENING DAY Because of the steady rain of the last few days the opening day of the fishing season was the worst for some years, said a Christchurch angler yesterday. He had not gone out himself but knew of others who had and none had reported good bags. In one area cn the Selwyn river where 20 men were fishing, only one fish was caught. Every river from the Hurunui to the Rakaia was carrying a lot of water and very dirty. The rivers running into Lake Ellesmere were very low, and anglers would be glad to see the lake outlet closed.

A few days of fine weather after the rain would make fishing conditions ideal, said the angler. There appeared to be a good quota of fish in the lakes ?t present.
