Mr James Sugden Hanna, barrister and solicitor, of Wellington, has been appointed a stipendiary magistrate. Mr Hanna, who is 53 years of age, was admitted as a barrister in 1921. He served in the First World War as a lieutenant in the 2nd Wellington Regiment and in the Second World War seryed at Army Headquarters in the Adjutant-General’s branch, recently being placed on the retired list with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Mr Hanna is vice-president of the Wellington Cricket Association.— (P.A.).
The Chief of the New Zealand Naval Staff, Commodore G. W. G. Simpson, C.8.E., R.N.. will visit the naval shore establishment, H.M.N.Z.S. Tasman, Lyttelton, this morning. Captain C. C. Waters, master of the Waiana, retired at Timaru on Monday after 33 years’ service with the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd. He was met by the officers and engineers of the Waiana and Waipahi, both of which were at Timaru, and presented with a watch and fountain pen. Captain Waters was born in South Canterbury, and first went to sea from Timaru. He will make his home at Sumner. Captain E. A. Cox, of Auckland, has relinquished command of the Korowai to take charge of the Waiana. Mr W. R. Chrisp, advance business representative of the Tivoli Circuit of Australia, arrived in Christchurch' yesterday fronr the West Coast.
