CUSTOMS REVENUE

SEPTEMBER FIGURES The revenue collected by the Customs Department at Christchurch during September this year showed an increase of more than £135,570 over the figure for September, 1946. Revenue from all items increased last month. For the six months ended September 30, this year’s revenue from most items increased considerably, but sales tax revenue fell by £277,215, and there was no revenue from the levy on the export of wool this year. Figures for the six months ended September 30 are: customs duties, £1,233,812 (£788,296); beer duty, £262.468 (£259,372); petrol duty, £179,181 (£137,082); tyre duty, £14,478 (£608); sales tax, £921,746 (£1,198,961); light dues, £4027 (£3423); export levy: wool, nil (£5982); hides. (£50,184 (£2405); miscellaneous. £637 (£708); totals. £2,666,533 (£2,396,787). AUCKLAND The larger volume of recent imports is reflected in the Customs returns for Auckland for September and for the nine months of the calendar year. Customs revenue collected during September, at £813,437, was more than double that of September, 1946. Sharp increases were also shown in motor soirit and tyre revenue for the month. The figures for the nine months ended September reveal a similar trend. Comparative returns are, 1946 figures being in parenthesis: September, Customs £813,437 (£373,790), motor spirit £89.290 (£68,765), tvres £7241 (£563), excise on beer £66.291 (£64,566), sales tax £383,318 (£438.527). Totals, £1.359.577 (£946.208). Nine months customs £5.349,733 (£3.308,526), motor spirit £780,694 (£605.204). tyres £53,592 (£9342), excise on beer £647.116 (£661,239); sales tax £3,189,665 (£4,388,901). Totals £10,020,800 (£8,373,212). DUNEDIN Dunedin Customs returns for September 1947 (with figures for September, 1946) in parenthesis, are: customs revenue. £144,159 (£124,245); beer duty, £72,530 (£62,951); sales tax, £106,440 (£125.061): gold duty, £585 (£415); tyre duty. £1551 (£82): petrol tax, £16,454 (£31.727): totals. £341,719 (£344.481).
