DRURY LANE AND VOLO AUDUBON

TRANSFER TO D. A. WITHERS’S TEAM

Volo Audubon and Drury Lane are now being trained at Addington by D. A Withers. An aged gelding by Lusty Volo from Florrie Audubon, Vblo Audubon showed his best form when trained at Greymouth by J. McClure last season to gain two wins and three minor placings, his wins being registered in the Ikamatua Trot at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting on March 15, and in the Au Revolt Handicap at the Greymouth-West-land Trotting Club’s meeting on April 7. Driven by C. Bryce, Volo Audubon gave a promising display in the Bowhill Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. After being in eighth place with a furlong covered, Volo Audubon raced up to be handy to Pocket Book and Navy Queen with a mile and a quarter to go. Volo Audubon took the lead approaching the entrance to the straight, but he weakened slightly over the last furlong’ and was beaten into fifth place in a close finish by Darrington Hall, Navy Queen, Starshell, and Silverlight. Volo Audubon looked well when he worked at Addington yesterday morning, and he should be seen to advantage over the mile and a quarter journey in the S. G. Holmes Memorial Handicap at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting this week. Drury Lane, which was unplaced in the Seaview Handicap at Addington on Saturday, is an aged horse by Sandydale from Dillon Rey, which is by Rey de Cro from a Huia Dillon mare. A smart pacer, Drury Lane recorded three wins and a third placing last season, and on that form, he should do well in Canterbury. McClure, who was training his team at Addington for a short time, recently returned to Greymouth, where he has Patti Dale and Amos Grattan in work.

Jottings Cameronian looked well when he worked with Forewarned at Addington yesterday morning. He should continue to pay his way for Mr L. G. Tisch this season. After being in eighth place with a furlong covered in the Farewell Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, Globe Direct showed a glimpse of his best form to beat all but Pre-Eminence. A speedy son of Springfield Globe and Molly Direct, Globe Direct raced well last season to be placed in 11 of his 16 starts, and he appeals as one of the best prospects in his class this season.

At his last start Imperial Grattan finished in fifth place after being slow away in the Queen Mary Handicap at Addington on August 30. Imperial Grattan, which races in the interests of P. P. Gallagher, who trains him at Washdyke, has a lot of speed and a winning turn may come for him in the Methven Cup this week. Gaillard’s Son Dead

Gaillard’s Son, which was missing from H. J. Smith’s stable last week, was found dead in a drain in Henderson’s road, Halswell, on Monday. Smith said yesterday that the bank had evidently collapsed when Gaillard's Son was feeding on the side of the road and the horse was unable to struggle free after one of his hind legs had become caught in the fork of a stump of a tree in the bottom of the drain.

Gaillard’s Son, which raced in the Interests of Mr J. Denham, raced well at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’' Association’s trials at Addington on September 23 to win his heat of the 2min 59sec class pace from Beckleigh. An aged gelding, Gaillard’s Son was by Gaillard from a winner in Lux Lunae, by Author fro J? Moonl ’t. which left the 1958 New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Morello, to Rey de Oro.

McKenzie until November 19, to register 15 wins and 19 minor placings since he began racing as a six-year-old in the 1945-46 season. A hardy type Nyallo Scott has raced well oyer all distances, and he may top off his record with a win in the New Zealand Trotting Cup next month.

The death occurred at Hamilton on Saturday of Mr W. H. Oliver, a well-known trotting owner and trainer, from spinal injuries suffered through being thrown from a sulky while working a horse at Claudelands on September 16. One of Mr Oliver’s pacers, Popular Girl, driven by his son* H. Oliver, won the Oneroa Handicap at Epsom on Saturday, and it was shortly after hearing the result of the lace that Mr Oliver died.

Mr Oliver, who was a prominent member of the Waikato Trotting Owners' Trainers’ and Breeders’ Association, is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. A Course Record

With an exhibition of trotting that delighted the large crowd at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Fantom beat a good field of pacers in the Putiki Handicap in 4min 25sec, a course record. Fantom was well back for nearly a mile and a half, but he finished in rare style to beat Indian Triumph by half a length with Lord Brooklyn a head away in third place. Minoru and Commotion, which set the pace for most of the way. tired in the run home.

Likely Improver La Lilly, the dam of Goldina, which won two races in an easy manner at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. is by the Rey de Oro horse Gaillard (3min 16 2-ssec), from a winner at the trotting gait in Ma Foi. By Wrack Ma Foi is out of Berenice, which left a successful trotter in Flotsam to the same sire. A smart pacer herself. Berenice is by Nelson Bingen from Cameos, by Galindo from Thelma, by Kentucky from the Touchstone mare. Pride of Lincoln. Goldina, which is trained at New BrighA> , William s. who also has Paddy Potts in his care, is a smart pacer and he appears destined to win his way to the best classes.
