FISHING SEASON
GOOD PROSPECTS REPORTED
With fishing gear in better supply than it has been for some years, anglers in Canterbury can look forward to good prospects for the fishing season, which opens to-day. Sales of licences have been above the average, and it is expected that there will be a record number of rods out early in the. season. Most firms have fairly plentiful supplies of fishing gear, although rods are in shorter supply and very costly. There has been a steady demand for all kinds of tackle, and some firms have been selling quantities of excellent but cheap English flies. Fairly large ■ stocks of lines, casts, and flies are available, although prices are high. Good bags could be expected in all the streams around the Lake Ellesmere district, said the ranger to the North Canterbury Society (Mr P. Fry) yesterday. According to advice received by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation . Society, the condition of the fishing rivers at noon yesterday was: Rakaia, Hurunui, and Waimakariri, not fishable; Selwyn and Ashley, clear and fishable; Halswell, very low and discoloured.
