MARRIAGE AGE FOR WOMEN
IS 35 TOO OLD? ENGLISH SPINSTER WRITES TO MAYOR Do former servicemen in New Zealand believe that a single woman at 35 years of age is too old for marriage? The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) has been asked this question in an air-mail letter frol# Miss A. Aitkinson, of Henholme, Silsden, Yorkshire.
“There has been a lot in our papers just recently about our former servicemen and the views they hold on marriage,” she writes. “One of these letters in the press said we were too old for them over 30. I looked after my parents until four years ago. Now, when I have time to go about, I find what has been in the press is quite true, for I’ve only recently been told I am too old at 35; yet I read the former servicemen abroad do not hold this view.
“I would, if possible, like to find out why this is so. I don’t drink or smoke and this also seems to be against me. I have often been told I am old-fashioned, but I seriously think if people lived cleaner and straighter lives this world would be in a better way. I want to make a new start in life, as I have no one here now that I have lost my mother. It comes rather as a shock to find yourself all alone.
“I do not know if you have any weekly papers as we have. My dad used to have ‘The Press’ sent over by a friend, but of course that stopped years ago, so I want you, please, to send this letter to one of your papers, so I may find out just what your former servicemen think on the above subject. Please send my name and address, so you will have no trouble if any should answer.”
