NELSON TOBACCO ACREAGE

“The Press” Special Service NELSON, September 30. The Nelson district will bear the responsibility for achieving one' of the main targets in the aid-for-Britain and dollar saving campaign, a production of at least 400 extra acres of tobacco this year and 1000 next year. Last season’s acreage was 3900, spread among 600 growers. Good progress is being made towards reducing one of the bottlenecks which it was thought might handicap additional output, a shortage of seedlings. Last week 30,000,000 have gone from city nurseries to growers ready for hardening off and pricking out, and 10,000,000 more are being raised in Motueka and Riwaka, where some growers have their own ’glasshouses. The seedlings are in excellent condition.
