LESS PETROL SAVED
DECLINE LAST WEEK VOLUNTARY EFFORT STILL HOPED FOR (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 30. Though there was some slight saving of petrol in New Zealand in the previous week, ground was lost la_t week, according to a report before the petrol saving committee of the Aid to Britain Council to-day. The chairman of the committee (Mr C. H. Williams) said the committee was unanimous that the saving asked for—only 10 per cent, overall—could be effected voluntarily. Mr Williams said the plea was not for an austerity campaign. Everyone could stay on the road so long as he saved a little. During the next fortnight conferences would be held in the 20 postal districts on the whole question of help for Britain, and each district would be given a petrol savings quota. A proposal to re-establish local transport co-ordination committees similar to those operating during the war would be discussed at an early meeting of the Aid to Britain Council
