Mr and Mrs F. J. T. Grigg, formerly of Leinster road, were passengers on the steamer express to Wellington on Saturday night. They will make thenhome in Wellington.
French readings and recitations were fiven by members of the Cercle rancais at a recent meeting. Prize winners were Madame Lightband and Mr Meredith. Members of the committee were the hosts for the evening.
The works committee of the Christchurch City Council hopes that the women’s rest rooms at the corner of Gloucester -and New Regent streets can be opened to-morrow. In a report presented at the council meeting last evening, it was stated that there seemed a reasonable expectation of having the job completed. Miss M. K. Steven, junior lecturer in classics, was granted one to two years’ leave of absence by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday to study at Sydney University.
The Rev. I. L. Richards presided at the monthly meeting of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children (Canterbury branch). The president welcomed Miss E. Cardale, J.P., as the newly-elected life member of the Christchurch branch and referred to the wonderful work she had done on behalf of the society. Newly-elected members of the committee, Mrs E. Cameron Smith and Mr L. Armstrong, were also welcomed. The advisory officer reported that for the last month 68 visits to cases in homes had been made, and there had been 108 applicants at the office requiring help. So successful was the first South Island conference of commandants of Voluntary Aid Detachments of the Red Cross Society at Timaru on Saturday that it was agreed to hold one every ?year. Fifty delegates were present. Mrs H. Wales (Christchurch), centre
commandant of the North Canterbury Voluntary Aid Detachment, who presided, explained that the conference had been called to give commandants and other officers the opportunity of discussing their problems, and of exchanging iaeas on their peacetime activities. The president of the Timaru Centre of the Red Cross Society (Mr M. A. Raymond) welcomed delegates, and the conference was formally opened by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan). Associated with him was Dr. R. D. King, patron of the Timaru centre of the society. Delegates were the guests of the centre at lunch and afternoon tea. On Saturday morning, the centre advisory directors and the lady superintendents, who are registered nurses, visited the Timaru Public Hospital and were met by the matron (Miss M. L. Lindsay). On Sunday morning the delegates from Dunedin who remained in Timaru were entertained at morning tea by Mrs R. D. King, commandant of the Timaru centre, and later were taken for a drive round the district.
