SELWYN PLANTATION BOARD
SEASON’S PLANTING COMPLETED
“The season’s planting was completed at the end of August, and all trees, par» ticularly those at New Park, will benefit from the rain last week,” stated the monthly report of the superintendent (Mr E. A. Cooney J, presented at a meeting of the Selwyn Plantation Board yesterday.
The report added that trees planted in the early part of the season were looking well, and the strike at Kendalls appeared to be excellent. The success of the oregon at New Park would depend upon the weather this summer, for the soil there was liable to dry out badly.
Details of the season’s planting showed that 501 acres had been planted and 786 acres blanked. This represented a total of 239.025 pinus insignis and 38,650 Oregon trees.
Comparing these figures with last year’s, Mr Cooney said that then 450,000 trees had been planted. This year fewer had been planted and it. just happened that the weather was favourable and the programme was completed in time with the number of men that could be obtained.
The report also mentioned that for the first five months of this financial year, production in the board’s areas amounted to 2,914,750 super, feet of timber and royalties amounted to £6131, compared with 1,759,989 super, feet and £3630 for the same period last year.
