CULTURAL SOCIETY
Dr. Herbert Money, who for the last 20 years has lived in Peru, was the speaker at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society, which was held in Begg’s Concert Hall on Saturday night, with Mr H. C. Brent presiding. Peru, he said, could be divided into three sections—first, the coastal strip, stretching from latitude 4 to latitude 18 south, where the rainfall was less than two inches a year; then the mountainous region of the Andes, where Indian villages were built at a great height, and, last, the jungle or forest country stretching to Brazil. Dr. Money showed interesting pictures of various parts of the country and its people. These included views of Lima, which has a population of 600.000, examples of contrasting Spanish and modern architecture, and archaeological remains of the Incas and the primitive methods used for cultivating the soil. He mentioned that the roads in Peru were remarkably good and that the strain of sheep, deteriorated from the Merino breed, was being improved by the importation of Corriedales and Romney Marsh from New Zealand. Dr. R. A. Falla screened the slides for Dr. Money’s address.
The first part of the programme was provided by Mr David Whisker, who played three flute solos. Mr Denys Cowl, who sang songs by Scarlatti. Handel, Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms, and Mr Douglas Zanders, who played piano solos by Granadoff. Rachmaninoff, and Debussy, and the accompaniments for Mr Whisker and Mr Cowl. Mr D. White thanked the speaker and artists.
Next year, when Victoria University College will celebrate its jubilee, the University Women’s Club will have attained its majority, it was stated at the annual meeting of the club. There is to be a special drive for new members so that the twenty-first birthday of the club may be fittingly celebrated.
