INCREASE OF £25 A YEAR

CIVIL SERVANTS’ SALARIES <P.A.> WELLINGTON, September 27. A general increase of £25 a year, with certain modifications, will be granted to Government employees by way of an addition to the present salary scale with effect from October 1. Announcing this to-day. the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) said this was in line with the Arbitration Court’s recent pronouncement, and followed representations made a week ago by organisations representing Government employees. Increases will apply to public servants under commission control. to the education, police. and telegraph services. In cases where board and lodging are provided by the Government, the necessary adjustment required to be made will be the subject of immediate discussion with representatives of the employees’ organisation.

Where wages and conditions are governed by special agreements oetween the Government and the industrial unions, there will be a review by the parties to such agreements on the basis of ensuring to emnloyees substantially the same concessions as they would haze under comparable Arbitration Court awards. Decision with regard to railway emplovpes will be determined by the Railways Tribunal.
