ASBESTOS CEMENT PRODUCTS
CHRISTCHURCH FACTORY OUTPUT
Two shipments of asbestos fibre from Canada, which are now on the New Zealand coast, will assure continuity of supply of asbestos cement products from the Riccarton factory of Dominion Industries, Ltd., until at least the end of the year. The factory’s normal annual production of asbestos cement products for the building industry is 2,500,000 square yards, one-third of which goes to the greater Christchurch area and two-thirds to the rest of the South Island.
In recent months, however, the factory’s output has been reduced by 50 per cent because of scarcity of fibre. A representative of the company said yesterday that the factory had no stock to work on and had been depending on monthly shipments. There were heavy demands on the asbestos mines in Canada, and production of fibre was not equal to the demand. Advice of another shipment for Christchurch was expected at the end of this month, but it would be some time before the shipment arrived.
