STATEMENT BY MAYOR The establishment of an aluminium industry was described by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) yesterday as of vital interest to* New Zealand, and particularly to the South Island, which was the only part of the country where it could operate. Mr Andrews, who is president of the. South Island Local Bodies’ Association, met the representatives of the firm of Aluminium, Ltd., who are investigating the prospects of establishing an aluminium industry in the southern sounds, and afterwards said there were vast potentialities in the production of the metal in New Zealand, and its use for roofing and housing.
