NEW BRIGHTON CLUB

TROTTING

Maudeen In Form For Main Race

ACCLAMATION MAY WIN H. F. NICOLL HANDICAP

Maudeen’s decisive wins in the Islington Handicap and the Queen Mary Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s; national meeting and in the Montgomery Handicap at the New Brighton i Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6 stamp her as a high-class pacer,; and she will probably be sent out a good favourite for the President’s! Handicap, the main event at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting ■ at Addington to-morrow. A nicely-moulded five-year-old daughter of Grattan Loyal and' Queen Maud, Maudeen is trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron for Mr F. S. L. Fisher. She is a grand stayer, and she should have little difficulty in winning her way to cup company this season. Acclamation, which followed up her win in the Addington Trotting Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August 30 with a good effort to finish in second place to Calumella in the Spring Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6, will have her next start in the H. F. Nicoll Handicap at Addington to-morrow. Acclamation, which is one of the most promising trotters in her class, will be bracketed with Calumella, and the combination will probably carry solid support. The track did not appear to be affected by the rain yesterday, and it should provide good going.

The following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator: Introductory Handicap, Suzerain and Worthy Robert; Shirley Handicap, Dillonia Queen and Seven Bar, French Gold and Gantree, Makarewa and Mischief; Seaview Handicap, Mistydale and Red Hussar. Becky Loyal and Surely; Bowhill Handicap. Lady Spray and Trevathan; H. F. Nicoll Handicap, Acclamation and Calumella. Song Bird and Jimmy Scott; Farewell Handicap, Globe Direct and Watcher, Loyal Peter and Turco, Radical and Knave of Diamonds. Excellent fields of evenly-matched horses are carded and patrons should enjoy a good day’s sport. Horses in form include:— Introductory Handicap: Java, Port sowen, Sure Money. Shirley Handicap: His Excellency, Gantree, Ikaroa. Seaview Handicap: Good Review, Red Hussar, Proprietor. President’s Handicap: Maudeen, Lady Ngaio, Maori Home. Bowhill Handicap: Sil verlight, Starshell. Navy Queen. H. F. Nicoll Handicap: Acclamation, Sure Harvest, Sure Note. Pacific Handicap: Right Royal, Copper Trail, Ben Adam. Farewell Handicap: Plunder Bar, Checkmate, Maudeen. The folic wing are the fields:— 10.45 a.m.— INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, Of £325. Trotters. 3min 57sec class. One mile and five furlongs.

Sent out 2-3 in the betting on the St. Albans Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6, Java justified his confident support when he romped home an easy winner from Sure Money, with Great Venture and Julie in the minor places. By Nelson Derby from Mavis Wood, which has left Winners at both gaits, Java can trot fast, an? he should not be troubled by his 48 yards handicap.

Likely improvers in the field include Julie, Sandy Duval, Silver Volo, and Port Bowen. A gelding by Quite Sure from Haymaker, Sure Money won on a holding track at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting on May 24, and if he strikes conditions to suit him he may extend this field. Port Bowen raced well at the matinee meeting at Addington on Tuesday to win his heat from Sandy Duval. On that form they appear the most likely to divide the prize money with Java and Sure Money. 11.28 a.m.— SHIRLEY HANDICAP, Of £325 . 3min 52sec class. One mile and five furlongs.

Driven by D. C. Watts, His Excellency raced well at his last start to finish in second place to Proprietor in the Brighton Handicap, of two miles, at Addington on September 6. The shapely son of Jack Potts and Judith has done well in F. E. Upton’s care since then, and he should prove hard to beat over the shorter distance to-morrow. Most opposition to His Excellency may come from Gantree, Henry of Navarre, and Ikaroa. Gantree and Henry of Navarre both lost ground at the start of the Rakaia Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing Club’s meeting on September 13, and then showed a lot of speed to finish in second and third place respectively. Ikaroa secured an eight lengths’ win over Kimono Girl in the first division of the Selma Trot Handicap at the same meeting. A likely improver, Ikaroa may fight-out the finish with His Excellency, Gantree, and Henry of Navarre. 12.13 p.m.— SEAVIEW HANDICAP, Of £475. 2min 53sec class. One mile and

With 100 yards to go, Good Review appeared as the likely winner of the Avon Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting last month, but Despatch finished very fast to beat him by half a length. A gelding by Sandydale from Credit Funds, Good Review appears to be above the average, and if R. H. Butterick can secure a safe passage with him he should prove capable of winning the Seaview Handicap from the 12 yards mark. The trotter, Mistydale, which will be bracketed with the promising Red Hussar, gave a fine display at tile trials at Addington on Tuesday. Mistydale is a quick beginner, and she should be prominent for most of the way. The field includes likely types in Golden Game, Proprietor, and Scottish Brogue, and, in what should prove an interesting contest, they should be handy to Good Review and Red Hussar over the last furlong. 12.58 p.m.—

Lady Ngaio meets Maudeen on 24 yards better terms in the President’s Handicap than when she was beaten by a length and a half by Maudeen in the Montgomery Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting last month. At the difference in the handicaps she may prove capable of reversing placings tomorrow. Lady Ngaio, which looks well, marred her effort at the trials at Addington on Tuesday by breaking, but at her best she is a smart performer, and she should prove capable of winning her way to much better company. Snowflake may prove one of the best of the horses on the scratch mark. A consistent mare, Snowflake has raced well over two miles, and she may earn some of the prize money to-morrow. Checkmate, Dillondale, Maori Home, Radical, and Stimulant, which are handicapped on the 12 yards mark, all have good efforts to their credit, but recent form indicates that Checkmate and Maori Home should have the best prospects tomorrow.

At his last start, Checkmate recorded 4min 24 l-ssec when he beat Mountain Hall by a neck in the Queen Mary Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August '3O. A consistent pacer, Checkmate has gained five wins in his last six starts, and that record entitles him to respect in any company. A hardy type, Maori Home has a record of five wins and a second placing in his last eight starts, and together with Maudeen, Lady Ngaio and Checkmate he should carry solid support. 1.43 p.m.—

(P.) 12 A good stayer, Silverlight was narrowly beaten by Minoru in the Oxford Handicap at Addington on September 6, and he should show up from the 24 yards mark in the Bowhill Handicap. Navy Queen and Admiration look the pick of the horses on the scratch mark. An aged daughter of Grattan Loyal and Oxford Queen, Navy Queen has been working well for L. C. Frost at New Brighton, and a winning turn for her may not be far away. Admiration’s record last season included a win over Rawene Grattan on a heavy track at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting on June 7. A well-bred mar® by Grattan Loyal from Bonny Logan, Admiration may prove . capable of springing a surprise to-morrow. M. B. Edwards has Starshell looking garticularly well, and if the daughter of andydale and Skyglow is on her best behaviour she should finish in the money. 2.28 p.m.— H. F. NICOLL HANDICAP, Of £675. Trotters. 3min 31sec class. One mile and five furlongs.

33sec for a mile and five furlongs when she won the Addington Trotting Stakes at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on August 30 was a. i outstanding pejtqrmance, and a repetition of that form should find her an easy winner in the H. F. Nicoll Handicap. Acclamation will be bracketed with the Calumet Axworth mare, Calumella. which won at Addington at her last start. Java, which will start off the scratch mark with Flying Scott, is engaged in the Introductory Handicap earlier in the day, and unless he wins that event he is unlikely to start, as he is giving away time in this race. Sure Note and Sure Harvest have both attracted attention to their prospects by their recent efforts, and they should do well this season. 3.13 p.m.—

Right Royal, a winner at his last start, should not be troubled to give away starts ot up to 24 yards to the field in the Pacific Handicap. Copper Trail and Lyndale look the best of the nine horses on the scratch mark. A gelding by Quite Sure from June Nelson, Copper Trail raced well at the matinee meeting at Washdyke on Monday to win his heat, and he may develop into a good winner this season for Mrs E. M. Flynn, for whom he is trained by P. P. Gallagher. Lyndale. which is trained at Tinwald by J. Grice for Mrs F. E. Stringer, is making his first appearance for the season. A gelding by Sandydale from Sunranes, Lyndale raced well last season to secure a win, two second placings and a fourth placing in five starts. A solid type, Ben Adam has previously raced well over two miles, and he apgears the most likely to extend Right oyal, Copper Trail and Lyndale over the concluding stages. 3.58 p.m.— FAREWELL HANDICAP,

A fine performer over all distances, Plunder Bar followed up his win in the National Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan • Trotting Club’s meeting on August 30 with a second placing to Belhall in the Electric Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 6. Plunder Bar is now at the top of his form, and he may be sent out favourite for the Farewell Handicap, where he should meet strong opposition from other good pacers including Checkmate, Loyal Peter, Maori Home, Maudeen, Jack’s Son, and Gold Sheik. Loyal Peter is the problem horse in the field. A brilliant sprinter, his chance depends on his making a smooth beginning. Loyal Peter’s record includes wins over some of the best pacers in commission, and his prospects cannot be lightly dismissed. •

Form in the main event, the President’s Handicap, should provide a reliable guide for the sprint in which Plunder Bar, Checkmate, and Maudeen are all entitled to solid support.

NIGHT TROTTING

INTRODUCTION IN N.S.W. INTENDED

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 25. After a keen debate, the New South Wales Parliamentary Labour Party successfully opposed the Premier (Mr J. McGirr) and decided that night trotting with betting should be introduced as soon as possible in New South Wales. It is believed that legislation to this effect will be introduced before the end of the year. An effective campaign by trotting interests ensured that the caucus vote should be almost unanimous. Mr McGirr expressed disappointment at the result because of his conviction that many matters of more importance should have priority over night trotting.
