NEW DRAINAGE BOARD PUMPS—Three of 10 three-inch crude sewage pumps designed by Mr A. Macintosh, chief mechanical engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board, and made by a Christchurch engineering firm. Each pump is capable of pumping 250 gallons a minute. They are claimed to be simple to make and easy to maintain and inspect. In this photograph, taken at the pumping station in Tuam street, Linwood, an engineer is seen inspecting the bearings of one of the pumps. Before the war the Drainage Board used to import pumps, but when imports could not be obtained the board took steps to design its own.
