TANK TRAP ON FARM AT MARSHLAND
OWNER SEEKS GREATER COMPENSATION (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, -September 24. Defence works done on a Marshland farm in the days when New Zealand was preparing againsf the threat of Japanese invasion were blamed in a petition to the House of Representatives to-day for losses of onion and carrot crops valued at more than £l7OO. The petitioner, Lawrence Henry Burney, said that a tank trap was built on his property, and it involved removing part of a fence. He claimed that as a result he had lost the use of part of his land Other parts had been flooded and damaged ?y straying stock which had come Through the broken fence, eating his crops. He had so far received' £2OO in compensation, and he sought further relief. The petition was presented by Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition, Hurunui).
