TARIFF TALKS AT GENEVA

U.S.-BRITISH DEADLOCK

LONDON, September 23. “It is expected that the British and American deadlock over Imperial preferences and United States import duties will delay the conclusion of the international Trade Conference until after the target date bf October 15,” says the Geneva correspondent of Reuters.

“The senior British delegates are leaving to-day or to-morrow. The United Kingdom Trade Commissioner in Australia (Sir Robert Dalton) will lead the delegation until their return.”

The British United Press correspondent quotes British officials as saying there is only a very small chance of preventing the complete breakdown of the negotiations.

JEWISH BUSINESSMAN GIVES £42,000

BENEFACTION ANNOUNCED FROM HOSPITAL

NEWCASTLE, September 24. Mr Sol Green, a well-known businessman and identity of the Australian sporting world, announced yesterday from the hospital where he is seriously ill that he had selected to-day, Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, as the day on which to make a gift of £42.000 divided equally between five public hospitals. Writing from hospital. Mr Green said that he was making the gift in gratitude for the opportunities Australia had given him in life since his arrival, penniless, many years ago. He did not want to take any credit for the gift, as he was too old, tired, and ill to worry about that, but hoped some credit would be given members of the Jewish community less fortunate than himself.

He added that the gift was made also to support his plea that the people of Australia might always refuse to take part in any kind of religious or racial bigotry. Mr Green has already made many large benefactions to Victorian charities. He recently established a large trust fund to build homes for former servicemen. He has also made large gifts and been a tireless worker in the food for Britain campaign.
