AUSTRALIAN WHEAT CONTRACT
ESTIMATE OF COST TO COMMONWEALTH
(Rec. 10 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 24. Australia’s wheat contract with New Zealand has already cost the Commonwealth taxpayers £876,962, according to official estimates. For this financial year the Government has budgeted on the basis that the contract will cost Australia a further £2,000,000. The price fixed for 18,000,000 bushels of wheat, to be sold over four years to New Zealand, was 5s 9d a bushel. The price was then well below the world parity price. To-day the export price is 17s a bushel.
