SELECTION OF TEACHERS
COMMITTEE BEGINS INTERVIEWS
. With more than 300 applicants in its district for 145 vacancies at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College next year, the selection committee of the Canterbury Education Board has begun interviewing candidates. Members of the committee ?re Mr A. E. Lawrence (chairman of the appointments committee), Mr H. D. Prichard (senior inspector), Mr Duncan Mackay (principal of the college), and Mr L. E. Rowley (secretary of the board) The quota of 145 for the Christchurch college represents an increase of more than 33 1-3 per cent, on numbers accepted this year, the Minister of Education (Mr H. G. R. Mason) having approved the increase to relieve the shortage of teachers and meet the peak demand expected about 1950 when the full effects of increased birthrates after the depression and after the Second World War will be reflected in large numbers for infant and senior classes.
The selection committee has begun its task in Christchurch and will hold interviews in other centres next month, leaving for Timaru on October 1 and Greymouth on October 7.
