U.S. PROTESTS TO JUGOSLAVIA

The State Department announced today that the United States had protested vigorously to Jugoslavia against the “unwarranted detention and maltreatment” of British and American soldiers and sailors. ~ . .. T „ The department said that the Jugoslav authorities were still detaining seven British officers and men and one American officer and one enlisted man. Their immediate release had been demanded. „ i Five members of the King s Royal Rifle Corps, who were seized in June and detained for four days, had been maltreated. , , « ... v It is understood that the British Foreign Office is making a similar protest. Swimmer Contracts Paralysis.— Nancy Riach (Britain), who has been competing in the European swimming championships, has contracted infantile paralysis. She holds the English* amateur records for the 150, 220, 300, 500, and 880 yards events. She is 19, and has been breaking English and Scottish records since she was 15. She was regarded as one of Britain’s main hopes for the next Olympic Games. Doctors said she had infantile paralysis at the base of the brain.—Monte Carlo, September 13.
