ASHBURTON CLUB

RACING

TWEEDSIDE WINS HANDICAP ZORRO’S EASY WIN IN GRIGG STAKES Decisive wins by Tweedside in the Ashburton Handicap and Zorro in the John Grigg Stakes were a feature of the racing at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting at Ashburton on Saturday. The meeting opened in fine but cold weather, but conditions improved as the day went on. The attendance was only fair, and the club was unfortunate that the weather was unfavourable in Christchurch on Saturday morning. The totalisator handled £34,337, compared with £50,888 10s last year, a decrease of £16,551 10s. Following rain early in the morning, the track was cutting out early but with a good drying wind the going improved with each race. Tweedside gave nothing else a chance at the finish of the Ashburton Handicap. After being back the back of the field in the early stages. Tweedside moved up to be in third place behind Botany and Dash o' Dink passing the half-mile. He took charge at the distance and galloped on solidly to win very comfortably by two lengths from Brockie, which made up ground in the run home and just managed to cut Dash o’ Dink out of second place. Deep Harmony was the first to show out from Botany, Brockie, Wild Ribbon, and Finalist, but at the end of two furlongs Botany took over the pacemaking and was followed by Deep Harmony, which was just clear of Wild Ribbon, Brockie, which ■was drifting in the running. Finalist. Dash o’ Dink, Royal Tan, Tweedside, and Avonbridge, all racing in close order. Finalist had moved up into second place at the six furlongs, but could not hold his position, and at the five furlongs AvonBridge had joined Botany in the lead and the pair were three lengths clear of Wild Ribbon and Finalist, which was struggling. Then came Dash o’ Dink, Deep Harmony, Falconbridge. Tweedside, Desert Victory, and Brockie. In the next furlong Dash o’ Dink and Tweedside both improved their positions to follow Botany past the three furlongs, with Desert Victory, Falconbridge, Pandemonium, and Deep Harmony most prominent of the others. Once into the straight, Tweedside and Dash o’ Dink soon had Botany’s measure, and at the distance Tweedside had charge from Dash o’ Dink, Deep Harmony, Desert Victory, and Brockie, which was pushing through on the inner. Tweedside never looked like being headed and carried on to w in by two lengths from Brockie, with a head to Dash o’ Dink. Desert Victory was another length further back fourth. Then came Deep Harmony, Falconbridge, Royal Tan, Pandemonium, and Penetrate. The last to finish was AlSirat, which tailed off. Zorro’s Speed In the John Grigg Stakes Zorro showed too much speed for his rivals over the last stages of the race, drawing out in the last furlong to win easily by three lengths from Renowmed, which was much better placed in the early running than usual but did not finish on quite so strongly. Coral Arc was another three furlongs away in third place. He was well back in the running for most of the journey and *ust got up to beat Ned Kelly. Kartikeya, which was slow away and back in the field with Coral Arc for the greater part of the journey, was close up in fifth place, but he never looked like a winner. On the day both Coral Arc and Kartikeya were disappointing. Windrush, Detract, and Harley were slow away. Carry On and Zorro being the first to show out from Arc. Renowned, Ned Kelly, and General Argosy. When the field settled down Ned Kelly had moved up to join Carry On and Zorro had dropped in behind them. They were followed by General Argosy and Renowmed. with Coral Arc next, then Harley and Kartikeya, the last three being Rival Chase, Detract, and Windrush. Passing the half-mile. Renowned moved up to be handy to Ned Kelly and Carry On, the next pair being Zorro and General Argosy with Harley, Coral Arc, and Kartikeya together next. Carry On was weakening as the field turned for home, and Ned Kelly just led Renowned into the straight from Zorro, Coral Arc and Kartikeya still being several lengths back. Renowned had no sooner got the upper hand of Ned Kelly than she was challenged by Zorro, which drew away over the last furlong for a comfortable win by three lengths. Renowned just as easily beat Coral Arc, which made a late Yun and just got up to beat Ned Kelly and Kartikeya, only heads separating the three. General Argosy and Carry On were next, clear of Rival Chase and Detract. Results:— COUNTY HACK HURDLES Of £250 One mile and five furlong*. 2.2—■ J. H.
