VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
HOSTELS PLANNED AS JUBILEE MEMORIAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 12. Victoria University College will celebrate its golden jubilee in February and March of 1949, and the principal (Sir Thomas Hunter) said to-day that the committee arranging the celebrations was planning an appeal to former students and the public for funds to build hostels for men and women as a practical memorial of the jubilee. Before the war the average number of students each year was about 1000. This year there were more than 2000. and it was unlikely the figure would ever fall below that. The immediate result had been overcrowding in the college. Attending’ classes this year were 540 students from outside Wellington, The only college hostel wrs Weir House, accommodating 88 students. and it was considered essential that additional hostels be provided. Though the major difficulty was the shortage of building material, it was hoped that in 18 months’ time the position might have eased sufficiently for a start on construction to be made.
