STAMP AUCTION SALES
KEEN INTEREST AT PETONE "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, September 12. Fortnightly auction sales of stamps at Petone are attracting a good deal of interest from philatelists. The majority of stamps offered were from the 40-year-old stock of a South Island dealer. The highlight was a complete sheet of London print penny Universals in perfect condition which brought £5 10s.
One Philippine Island stamp brought 32s 6d. and a set of Guernsey and Jersey stamps 21s. Dozens of sheets of stamps bearing a 40-year-old marked value of from Id to 7s each sold at 2s. Trays of all varieties also sold cheaply. Burma peace sets. Southern Rhodesia Royal Visit and Northern Nigeria mint copies of the first stamp issued, brought 3s. Bidding was brisk when a copy of the New Zealand handbook with plates in good condition was offered. It sold at £9 10s. First day covers of several flights have proved popular. At the first sale a C. T. P. Ulm flight first-day cover brought 30s. First-day covers of Tin Can mails sold for 18s and 7s.
