CAR CONVERSION CHARGES
MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS (P.A.) AUCKLAND. September 5. Although there had been almost a public protest at the leniency of Courts in dealing with motor-car conversion cases, there was some misconception in the public mind of the fact that cases had to be dealt with on their merits, said Mr J H. Luxford, S.M., to-day, when he sentenced James Alexander Mcßae, aged 20, a grocer, who pleaded guilty to unlawful conversion The Magistrate added that it passed his comprehension that with these cases reported almost daily in the newspapers, and with prison sentences being imnosed that young men thought they could "get away with it.” Probation in these cases, unless there were exceptional circumstances. was out of the question. The accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour.
