AVONDALE MEETING
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, September 5. There was light rain last night and this afternoon, and the outlook for the opening of the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-morrow is doubtful. The course dried a good deal as a result of the fine weather early in the week, and the going will not be as heavy as it has been for the most recent meetings in Auckland, unless there is more rain overnight. It is probable that the Kindergarten Stakes will be run in two divisions. Provision also made for two divisions in the Cornwallis Handicap, but scratchings have brought the field to within the safety limit. x Horses expected to find favour include: 10.35 a.m.—September Hurdles: Hunting Mac, Bay Robe, Sir Fox. 11.20 a.m.—Cornwallis Handicap: Flfiral Dance, Angeline, Master Coronach. 12.5 p.m.—Henderson Handicap: Lang*mor, Te Paerata, Kind Regards. 12.55 p.m.—Avondale . A gelding by Quite Sure from Arran Sun, Elation has shown his best form on heavy tracks, and he should pay his way for his new owner when he strikes conditions to suit him. Long Spell After a spell of more than two years from the race-track, Smirke will make his reappearance in the Cambridge Handicap at Addington to-day. Now trained by G. S. Smith for Mr J. Shelly, Smirke showed good form in the 1944-45 season to win two of his three races. By Rey de Oro, Smirke is out of Virginia, which is by Denver Huon from Tui Russell, by Russell Patch from Elie de Beaumont, by Prince Imperial from a Mambrino King mare. In C. R. Berkett’s Team Technique, which secured one minor placing last season when trained by W. R. Butt, is now being trained at Templeton by C. R. Berkett for Messrs H. W. Alston and N. Swann. Promising youngsters on G. McKendry’s farm at Methven include a shapely filly by Springfield Globe from the Sandydale mare, San Gabriel; a stoutly-built colt by U. Scott from Festival, which left Dunmore and Gay Piper to the same sire; and a filly by Springfield Globe from Loyal Rose, by Grattan Loyal from Wild Princess, which left winners in Prince de Oro to Rey de Oro and Royal Grattan to Grattan Loyal. The youngsters have been well done during the winter months, and they all appear to be likely types. To Race at Ashburton Wayfarer has been nominated by B. Grice for the Selma Trot at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting next week. A brother to the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Haughty, Wayfarer showed his best form last season when he finished in second place to Commander Scott in the Winfelow Trot Handicap at the Ashburton Racing. Club’s meeting on May 3. /
