ATOM RESEARCH IN CANADA

MINISTER REVIEWS PROGRESS

RADIO-ISOTOPES TO BE SOLD ABROAD (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) OTTAWA, Sept. 4. The Minister of Reconstruction (Mr C. D. Howe) said to-day that the heavy water atomic energy pile at Chalk river, Ontario, was producing radioisotopes in quantity. They would be available for sale to foreign countries. Mr Howe told a press conference that the Canadian atomic oven had

been very successful, and was twice as large as Britain’s low energy pile. Mr Howe said that Canada would not sell any plutonium, as that was “the guts of the whole thing—the stuff they make atomic bombs with.” Mr Dean McKenzie, president of the National Research Council, said that Canada planned to release radioisotopes to experimental workers in agriculture, and these might revolutionise agricultural production throughout the world. For instance, they would enable research workers to determine the exact amount of fertiliser needed.
