COURT QUASHES CONVICTION
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 4. The court-martial conviction of a former W.A.A.C. captain, Kathleen Nash Durant, for complicity in the theft of the Hesse Crown jewels, was voided to-day by a Federal judge, thereby opening the way for her release from a five-year prison sentence. Durant was convicted by an Army tribunal in Germany, in August. 1946. The stolen jewels were worth 1,500,000 dollars.
The judge upheld Durant’s contention that her terminal leave had expired at the time of her arrest, and that she therefore was technically a civilian and not subject to military jurisdiction.
