N.Z. UNIVERSITY COLLEGES
FULLER AUTONOMY GRANTED AGREEMENT BY SENATE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 29.‘ A decision that will give fuller autonomy to New Zealand university colleges was reached at a meeting of the New Zealand University Senate. The meeting was almost unanimously in agreement with proposals that called for: (1) Detailed prescriptions for arts, science, and music courses by individual colleges. (2) The setting of separate papers in all subjects, and at all stages in these courses by each college (or for any group of colleges if so desired by a group). (3) The holding of purely internal examinations in stages I and II of B.A, and B.Sc. courses. Various other measures were adopted to ensure that although individual syllabuses might differ, the standard of attainment for a degree from each college would be uniform. The senate agreed that consideration of further proposals for entirely separate universities should be postponed until the effects of the recommendaitons had* been observed.
